All proceeds from the event will go to nonprofit My Dog is My Home, an organization that helps homeless people and their companion animals.
New York City will host its first-ever Tofurky Trot 5K—a running event sponsored by vegan brand Tofurky—on November 19 on Randall Island. Proceeds from the event will go to benefit vegan-led nonprofit organization My Dog is My Home, a charity founded by animal-activist Christine Kim with the mission to help NYC’s homeless human-animal families. “Animal-rights and human-rights activists are not seen rallying for the same causes often enough,” Kim told VegNews. “By bringing the two groups together for this event, we hope to promote the fact that animals are a part of our social environment. Helping people helps animals, and helping animals helps people.” For several years, Tofurky Trot events have taken place in Los Angeles and Portland, OR, but to Kim’s surprise, have not yet come to NYC. “When we first started organizing,” Kim said, “it was hard to believe that the Tofurky Trot had never been to New York City. We have a huge vegan community and one that believes in supporting social justice movements.” The event will task participants to run five kilometers in support of the cause and then treat guests to a free breakfast of vegan bagels and cream cheese, coffee, and doughnuts provided by supporting vendor Cinnamon Snail.
