UK Supermarket Launches Vegan Mince Pies

News

Just in time for Christmas, Asda creates a new plant-based alternative to the traditional British sweet snack.

British supermarket Asda, the second-largest in the country, is the first grocery chain in the United Kingdom to offer vegan mince pies for the holiday season. The new mince pies have been accredited by the Vegan Society, and are available in a pack of six frozen pies—made with raisins, festive spices, and shortcrust pastry—for $1.20. A four-pack of freshly baked vegan mince pies are also available in the bakery section for $1.35. Asda predicts that 18 million of its new vegan pies will be consumed during the holidays. As demand for vegan alternatives to traditional holiday meals increase, supermarkets are taking notice—including UK grocery chain Tesco, which added two vegan entreés to its Christmas centerpiece offerings last week.
