Food technology company JUST—formerly known as Hampton Creek—plans to open its first manufacturing facility in Asia to accelerate its mission of eliminating animal agriculture.
Josh Tetrick, CEO of billion-dollar food startup JUST—formerly known as Hampton Creek—will open the company’s first manufacturing facility outside of the United States in Asia this year. Tetrick co-founded the San Francisco-based company—known for its eggless products Just Mayo, Just Cookie Dough, and line of vegan dressings—in 2011 with the mission to replace animal products in the food industry with plant-based alternatives. “If we were starting the business from scratch,” Tetrick told Foodnavigator-Asia, “we’d probably start in Asia. If we look where the demand is likely to be, where food security is the biggest concern, and where cultural connection to our products could be the highest, then that could be Asia.” The company debuted its newest product Just Scramble—a vegan egg replacer that is made from a mung-bean protein sourced from regions in Asia—in San Francisco-based eatery Flore last year and expanded the offering to the menu of Hong Kong-based marketplace Green Common in January. JUST also plans to debut its first clean-meat product (also known as “cultured meat,” in which animal meat is grown from a small number of cells in a lab setting) by the end of year, which would make it the first company to bring such a product to market.
