Hudson Valley confectionary store Kingston Candy Bar developed a Tide pod-inspired doughnut so people would stop eating detergent.
New York-based sweets shop Kingston Candy Bar debuted Tide pod-inspired doughnuts last month. The doughnut (which is available vegan) is decorated with blue and orange vanilla frosting reminiscent of the detergent product. The dangerous trend—in which teens are challenging each other to eat the poisonous pods—began with a satirical op-ed published by The Onion in 2015, which sparked an internet frenzy for several years. “Something that crazy, and stupid, and dangerous; we decided to make a little fun of them and make a doughnut,” owner Diane Reeder told local media outlet The New Paltz Oracle. Reeder said that she initially wanted to flavor the frosting with lavender, but chose to use only vanilla as she was worried people would think it was flavored with soap. Kingston Candy Bar’s version—which sold out in three days—is safe to consume for humans and does not harm animals. In addition to several vegan doughnuts and cookies, the shop sells vegan ice cream by local brand Cashewtopia.
